What Is a CNIC?

The Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is the primary identity document for Pakistani citizens aged 18 and above. Issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), the CNIC serves as proof of citizenship, is required for voter registration, banking, SIM card acquisition, government services, and much more. Without a CNIC, full participation in civic and economic life in Pakistan is extremely difficult.

Who Can Apply for a CNIC?

  • Pakistani citizens who are 18 years of age or older
  • Citizens who previously held a National Identity Card (NIC) and need to upgrade
  • Those whose CNIC has expired (renewal) or was lost/damaged (replacement)

Citizens between 15 and 17 years can apply for a Juvenile Card, which automatically upgrades to a CNIC upon turning 18.

Documents Required for a First-Time CNIC

Before visiting NADRA, gather the following:

  • Original B-Form (child registration certificate) or old NIC if applicable
  • Parent's / guardian's original CNIC
  • Original birth certificate (Union Council or hospital-issued)
  • Original matriculation certificate (if available)
  • Proof of address (utility bill, property documents, or parent's CNIC showing same address)
  • 2 recent passport-sized photographs (though biometric data is captured on-site)

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Locate your nearest NADRA Registration Centre (NRC): Use the NADRA website or helpline (051-111-786-100) to find the closest centre.
  2. Book an appointment (optional but recommended): NADRA's online portal allows you to book a time slot to avoid long queues.
  3. Visit the NRC with original documents: Bring all required documents in original form along with photocopies.
  4. Biometric data capture: NADRA staff will take your fingerprints, photograph, and signature digitally at the centre.
  5. Pay the applicable fee: Fees vary depending on the processing category (Normal, Urgent, or Executive). Check the current fee schedule on the NADRA website.
  6. Collect your token/receipt: This contains a tracking number you can use to check the status of your application.
  7. Receive your CNIC: Delivery time ranges from a few days (Executive) to a few weeks (Normal). You can collect it from the NRC or have it delivered to your home.

CNIC Processing Categories & Approximate Timelines

Normal30 daysLowest fee tier
Urgent7–10 daysHigher fee
Executive2–3 daysHighest fee; priority processing

Timelines and fees are subject to change. Always verify current rates on the official NADRA website.

CNIC Renewal and Replacement

CNICs are valid for 10 years. You will receive an SMS reminder when your card is close to expiry. The renewal process is similar to the initial application but requires fewer documents — primarily your expiring CNIC and biometric re-verification.

For a lost or stolen CNIC, you must file an FIR (First Information Report) at your local police station before applying for a replacement. Bring the FIR copy to NADRA along with your original documents.

CNIC and Voter Registration: The Connection

Your CNIC address directly determines your constituency for voting purposes. If you have recently moved, update your CNIC address at NADRA first — otherwise you will remain registered (or unregistered) in your previous area. This connection makes keeping your CNIC current essential for every Pakistani citizen who wants to vote.
